Cabo da Roca

 

 

 

 

 

The Cabo da Roca Lighthouse is a beacon/lighthouse located 165 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, on Portugal's and continental Europe's most westerly extent Cabo da Roca. The lighthouse stands 22 metres at its base (its light commands a 165 metre beam from sea level). In addition to the main tower, the complex is composed of nine buildings, since prior to electrification, it was necessary to marshall a team to maintain the lamp, store valuable equipment and produce the Acetylene necessary to run the torch. Currently, the lighthouse supports a team of three lighthouse keepers, in order to monitor the lamp and signal/communicate between Cabo da Roca and Ericeira.

Lighthouse on the Capelinhos Volcano

 

It is situated on Faial Island, Azores. The lighthouse marks the old position of the Ponta dos Capelinhos. This is the area where the last volcanic eruption in all of the Azores occured. The eruption happened over a thirteen month period from 1957-58 and an entire town was buried in ash from the eruption. The only nearby building that was not buried by the eruption was the lighthouse but its first floor was covered by the ash.

North Holland is a province situated on the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands. The provincial capital is Haarlem and its largest city is Amsterdam. The province of North Holland as it is today has its origins in the period of French rule from 1795 to 1813. This was a time of bewildering changes to the Dutch system of provinces.

PORTUGAL - MADEIRA

Porto da Cruz

Porto da Cruz (English: port of the cross) is a civil parish in the municipality of Machico in the northeastern corner of Madeira. The origin of the communities name came from the fact that the original discoverer affixed a steel cross at the port, in order to better identify the location to ocean travelers. The northern parish is enveloped by the mountains of Paul da Serra: Pico da Suna (1040 metres), Pico do Larano (765 metres) and Pico da Maiata (766 metres) are the highest points in the parish. Even along the coast, Penha de Águia (a mountainous escarpment 580 metres in altitude) is difficult to climb; the area, Penha da Águia, means mountain of the eagles, giving the impression that only the birds settle these lands.

Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital city and largest city of Portugal. It is the westernmost large city located in Europe, as well as its westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by hundreds of years.

Óbidos

Óbidos is a town located in the Oeste Subregion, of the Estremadura historical province, in Portugal. The area of the town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall, but divided between the two parishes of São Pedro and Santa Maria in the municipality of Óbidos. Óbidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture; its streets, squares, walls and its castle are a popular tourist destination. Each July Óbidos castle hosts a traditional Medieval Market. For two weeks the castle and the surrounding town recreate the spirit of medieval Europe.

Porto

Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal. Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The Luís I Bridge is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886.

Port wine is a Portuguese fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley in the northern provinces of Portugal. Traditionally, the wine was taken downriver in flat-bottom boats called 'barcos rabelos', to be processed and stored. However, in the 1950s and 1960s, several hydroelectric power dams were built along the river, ending this traditional conveyance down the river. Currently, the wine is transported from the vineyards by tanker trucks and the barcos rabelos are only used for racing and other displays.

Pinhão

Pinhão is a small town that just happens to be in the heart of Port wine country. While the small town is quiet and calm for most of the year, the autumn harvest always brings a lively bunch of workers and tourists to town, and people can participate in harvest activities such as grape stomping, wine tasting, and river cruises. Pinhão’s famous bridge was designed by renowned architect Gustave Eiffel.

Ferragudo

Ferragudo is a beautiful village in western Algarve on the south coast of Portugal. Many of the houses in Ferragudo are traditional fisherman’s homes. It really is a very picturesque scene when you arrive in Ferragudo to see the whitewashed houses 'tumbling' down the hillside towards the river front and people sitting outside the cafes around the village square, passing the time of day!
