ANIMALS - BIG CATS
Leopard, Mombo Camp, Botswana
The leopard, Panthera
pardus, is a member of the Felidae
family. Compared to other members of the Felidae family, the leopard has relatively
short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to
the jaguar, but is smaller and more
slightly built. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but
the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually
have central spots as the jaguars do. Leopards are elusive, solitary and largely nocturnal. They are known for their ability in climbing, and have been observed resting
on tree branches during the day, dragging their kills up trees and hanging them
there, and descending from trees headfirst. They are
powerful swimmers, although not as strong as some other big cats, such as the
tiger. They are very agile, and can run at over 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph),
leap over 6 metres (20 ft) horizontally, and jump up to 3 metres (9.8 ft)
vertically.

Collection Emotions - Beauty, tenderness and gestures of love
The term big cat – which is not a biological classification – is used
informally to distinguish the larger felid species from smaller ones. One definition of "big
cat" includes the four members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar and leopard. Members of this genus are the only cats able
to roar. A more
expansive definition of "big cat" also includes the cougar, cheetah, snow leopard and clouded leopard.
Lion cubs play to imitate the adults behavior. They play with anything that arouses them including sticks and their mothers tail. Mostly they play with each other but sometimes they try playing with an adult. Playing cubs is an indicator that they are well and not starving as they can go on for hours each day while as sick or starving cubs are not prone to play. It is the females that care for the young although the males provide an important task as they protect the young from predators.

Lynx
A lynx is any of
the four species within the Lynx genus of medium-sized wildcats. Lynx have short tails and the characteristic tufts of black hair on the tips
of their ears. They have a ruff under the neck, which has black bars, is not
very visible, and resembles a bow tie. They have large, padded paws for walking
on snow, and long whiskers on the face. Their body colour varies from medium brown, to goldish, to beige-white, and is
occasionally marked with dark brown spots. Lynx inhabit high altitude forests with dense cover of shrubs, reeds, and
tall grass. Although the cats hunt on the ground, they can climb trees and can
swim swiftly, catching fish.
