RUSSIA - NATURE

The Kumir River

Charyshskiy district is one of the most contrastive and, consequently, one of the most beautiful and interesting districts of Altai Krai. Four ridges cut it into valleys along which tumultuous rivers are flowing. The rivers Kumir, Korgon and other Charysh’s tributaries are unique in their beauty. There are a great number of natural monuments in the district: waterfalls Egerskiy, Kolyvanskiy, Spartak and others.

The Katun River

Patmos Island is located on the bank of the Katun River on the edge of Chemal village. You can reach the Island along the suspended bridge. The Island took its name after the isle of the same name in Greece, which is famous by the fact that the apostle St. John the Divine prayed there. The Ireland was sanctified in 1855. The first cathedral of St. John the Divine was built in 1849, but not on the Island. In 90s it was destroyed by Soviet government. Only in 1915 this cathedral was moved to the Patmos Island. Today it’s a skit (community of Old Believers) for women.

Altai Mountains

The Altai Mountains (Altay Mountains) are a mountain range in East-Central Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan come together, and are where the rivers Irtysh and Ob have their headwaters. The Altai mountains are home to a diverse fauna, because of its different habitats, like steppes, northern taigas and alpine vegetation. On the postcard you can see pasqueflowers in the Kurai Steppe, the North-Chuya Ridge.
