USA - OREGON

Oregon Coast

This beautiful silhouette, of Haystack Rock from Cape Kiwanda located at Cape Kiwanda State Park, foregrounds one of the coast's radiant sunsets. Composed of basalt, Haystack Rock was formed by lava flows emanating from the Grand Ronde Mountains 10 to 17 million years ago. Haystack Rock was once joined to the coastline but years of erosion have since separated the monolith from the coast.

Nice stamps.

Crater Lake

Crater Lake, the nation's deepest lake, sits in Oregon amidst the remnants of the Cascade volcano Mount Mazama, which erupted more than 7,700 years ago. In the centre of the lake is Wizard Island, a cinder cone caused by a last-gasp eruption after Mount Mazama collapsed.

Wonderful stamps.

Picture Gorge - Sheep Rock Unit

Named for prehistoric Indian painting found on its rock walls Picture Gorge presents a spectacular geologic display of layer upon layer of lava flow. Fifteen hundred feet of basalt lava have been cutby the erosive power of the John Day River. Cliffs provide homes for nesting swallows, canyon wrens, and birds of prey.

Nice stamps.
